Dawn Thomas Wallace (UK)

London based DAWN THOMAS WALLACEThe First Lady Of British Gospelwhich for the past 40 years has been a living legend on the European gospel scene.

In the 1980s, Dawn was lead singer in England's most famous gospel group The Trumpets of Zion (ToZ). Music lovers in particular were attracted to Dawn’s powerful vocals. They were then a significant factor of the flourishing gospel milieu that spread out of London. The group gave several concerts in the Royal Albert Hall and Westminster Central Hall and left a clear mark all over Europe as seen to this day.

When ToZ disbanded in the 1990s, Dawn found himself at a crossroads. But when she sang in churches, there was a reaction from the guests that made her realize that she had to do what she was born to do. Gospel is in her blood, as she is the daughter of a bishop and her mother sang gospel for many years with her three siblings in West London's 'Faith Temple Church of God.'

Dawn, now a world-famous soloist, looks back with joy on his time with ToZ, "It was an absolutely fantastic period, we were part of the British gospel artists who performed around Europe." Dawn has performed in the United States, Australia, Indonesia, Barbados and around Europe. Dawn was one of the leading singers in the Danish family comedy from 2004 "Oh Happy Day" which Hella Joof directed with i.a. Kurt Ravn and Ditte Gråbøl in the lead roles.

Her new album "DAWN THOMAS WALLACE" from the month of August, smoked in early September as number 8 on the prestigious amerikanske BDS Internet Gospel Radio Charts.

Paul Benjamin (USA)

It's now the 3rd year that blues, soul and gospel notability Paul Benjamin is to be the Blues Heavens conference and it's natural that he should stay a day longer and lead us all safely through this extraordinary afternoon.

Paul has been a champion of blues, soul and gospel most of his life. As a promoter, he has given touring artists a venue in Rockland Maine by presenting a long-running Monday night blues at Time Out Pub! For a touring artist, having a place that gives you a room to sleep in and a good meal and good pay on an off-night can make a tour possible. Paul understands this, and as a result, the Monday Night Blues Series attracts the most popular artists.

Paul Benjamin has also created the hugely successful North Atlanta Blues Festival and Brandenton Blues Festival in Tampa Bay, Florida,as well as consulting and working with several other festivals around the country. The North Atlantic Blues Festival is an annual two-day blues music festival featuring national blues artists and is considered one of the most prestigious on the East Coast. The festival is being held at Public Landing in Rockland, Maine. Many of the biggest names in blues and soul music have played at this prestigious East Coast festival.

As a child, his father, an avid music lover, "pulled" young Benjamin down to the Newport Jazz Festival.Occasionally, when playing a date in Boston, musicians like the late jazz performer Lionel Hampton would even come and visit them in their Rumford home. As a child in the 1960s, when Beatlemania took hold, Benjamin described himself as a "Stones man" because, as he puts it, "I loved the bluesy sound of the Rolling Stones." However, it was not until he worked at the Golden Spike bar in Rockland in 1978 that it all clicked. "We had booked a rock band that canceled, so we called Boston to see if they could send us up on another touring band," Benjamin recalls.

The musician they sent was Eddie Shaw (Howlin Wolf’s saxophonist and bandleader, for many years), with whom Benjamin began a lifelong friendship. Over the next few years, Benjamin traveled to Chicago with Shaw, where he says he was "trained" and networked with other bands. Soon, Rockland became part of the regular blues circuit.

These days, music keeps Benjamin busy full time, and he wears many hats in spreading the knowledge of blues, soul and gospel music, from promoter and festival consultant to record producer and manager. He started his record label North Atlantic Blues Records simply because Eddie Shaw continued to come to town without any CDs to sell to fans. In 2003, Benjamin was elected president of the Blues Foundation, based in Memphis, Tennessee. Through the foundation, he has helped coordinate events across the country to promote "blues education" and organized the annual Blues Awards, described as "Blues Grammies." Paul's commitment to the blues world is long lasting. Benjamin has been particularly focused on raising money for the Blues Hall of Fame building, across the street from the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.

After chairing the board of the Blues Foundation in Memphiscan now dedicate his to making the best festivals in the United States.

"I know who BB Kings, Little Milton and Etta James are,"said Benjamin. “But our children and grandchildren may not. We have to keep that legacy alive. ”

"I have enjoyed growing with the blues bands and being accepted into their family," says Benjamin. "It's been a great journey, and we have a lot more to come." Paul Benjamin wrote the book "Heart of Blues" 25 Years of the North Atlantic Blues Festival, a retrospective look at the festival's rich history. The book was released in 2018 and is available along with a brand new, triple DVD documentary about the festival that includes its history, past performances and interviews.
